Faces of India // Juanga, Orissa

“All of these lines across my face, tell you the story of who I am. So many stories of where I’ve been and how I got to where I am.” – Brandi Carlile

When I was in India, I had the amazing opportunity to photograph and take portraits for almost each family member participating in the mPowering Foundation program. We photographed the children during school, but the parents had to be persuaded to come by. This was hard since all of them HAVE (huge emphasis on this have) to work or be home preparing meals. We decided to have a small ceremony with dancers and food for all the participants in order for us to have the change to take portraits.

Each and every person lined up and sat in a chair, while I kneeled down and photographed them for almost two hours. Some where more than happy to participate, but other were not. I saw faces of happiness, sadness, longing, understanding etc.

It was incredible, because I got to see how much ONE single face could tell a million stories.

Here are some of my favorite stories.
